Why do our blood sugar levels need to be regulated?
A whopping 37.3 million people across the globe have diabetes and at least 23% of adults (or more) are undiagnosed! Diabetes is the number one death caused by cardiovascular diseases and has increased by more than 25% between 1990 to 2010. Research has shown that at least 1 in every 4 adults that are diagnosed with pre-diabetes, will eventually have diabetes later on in life. The rising cases of obesity are linked to the increased number of people being diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes leads to dysregulated levels of blood glucose which therefore transcends to an extremely increased amount of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer disease, cancer and multiple sclerosis.
The progression of diabetes and poor glucose level control can lead to potentially life threatening complexities. Lifestyle changes including nutrition, supplementation and exercise, will need to be addressed, to improve one's quality of life.
Healthy glucose levels and increased insulin sensitivity is correlated with longevity as the dysfunction of insulin sensitivity leads to ageing.
Berberine assists with lowering blood glucose levels, and lipid metabolism, and is therefore great to have whether you would like to keep your insulin at bay or want to increase your longevity. Berberine has also been noted to have similar properties to Metformin, which is a common drug prescribed to type II diabetics in order to regulate high blood sugar and insulin resistance.
NMN Bio’s Berberine has been optimised for maximum results. Milk Thistle has been added to our formula to increase the absorption of Berberine, as taking Berberine solely, has low absorption rates, when taken orally.
Milk Thistle is a P-Glycoprotein inhibitor. P-Glycoprotein inhibits the absorption of Berberine in the gut. As a result, this mix is optimised to increase the absorption of Berberine, and provide the maximum benefit from your supplementation. Both Berberine and Milk Thistle have been shown to act together to increase insulin sensitivity and decrease the lipid levels of bad cholesterol.
Berberine as an Energy Booster and Fat Burner
Berberine has many benefits, including the activation of AMPK, a key longevity component.
Adenosine Monophosphate Kinase (AMPK) is a protein that is present in many cells. When AMPK is activated, it works to retrieve energy such as fats and carbohydrates into cells, from the bloodstream. When ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is depleted, and Berberine is consumed, AMPK then signals the pathways in our body to replenish ATP in the cells and increase fatty acid oxidation. Therefore, this helps to boost energy and burn fat.
A study of obese human participants taking 500 mg of Berberine 3 times per day for twelve weeks, found that there was a reduction in the participants’ body weight and blood lipid levels. In addition, their hormone levels normalised, and there was a reduction in inflammation.
AMPK is also responsible for activating autophagy, a process that helps your cells to clear out any unwanted junk, damaged organelles and toxic waste.

Berberine Human Clinical Trials
Maintaining a healthy body and healthy weight protects us from many illnesses. Managing blood sugar and ensuring you don’t develop insulin resistance is one of the most crucial things you can do for your longevity and increasing your healthspan (the amount of time you spend in good health over the course of your life).
There are tens of human clinical studies looking into diabetic patients and prediabetics, and how they respond to Berberine supplementation. Overall, findings show that Berberine is significantly improving markers related to blood sugar control like HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose amongst others. Over this meta-analysis of 46 studies, Berberine demonstrated strong evidence of improving glycemic control and overall health in thousands of participants.
In a human study of 37 men and women with metabolic syndrome took 300 milligrams of Berberine, three times a day for three months. The study concluded that they all lost an average of two inches off their waist and their BMIs went from the obese to the overweight category.
In a recent study (2020), 900 people in China between the ages of 18-75 had polyps removed during a colonoscopy. They were randomly given either 300 milligrams of Berberine twice daily or a placebo. The participants were then followed up the first year and again, the second year. The study found that none of the participants developed colorectal cancer, however, the participants taking the Berberine had fewer recurrent polyps at 36%, compared to the placebo participants with 47%.
PubMed shows the number of papers published on Berberine each year. In 2020, an astonishing 630 papers were published! As time progresses, more and more people will be aware of the outstanding benefits of supplementing with Berberine.

FAQ
-
Is your Berberine easily absorbed?
NMN Bio’s Berberine is specially formulated with the addition of Silymarin/ Milk Thistle extract to enhance bioavailability. Furthermore, by taking your Berberine with a meal or directly after a meal that includes something fatty like cheese, yoghurt or olive oil, you ensure that your supplement has enhanced absorption.
-
How much Berberine should I take?
Take 1-2 capsules a day with or straight after your meal. The half life of Berberine is only a few hours, so you could either take one capsule twice a day, or if you want to push your body into autophagy in the second half of the day, you can just take 2 capsules after your last meal of the day.
-
Is Berberine safe?
Berberine has been proven safe in human clinical trials with dosages up to 1.5g a day for 6 months in human subjects. In rare cases, Berberine can cause an upset stomach and digestive discomfort. But the addition of Milk Thistle in our formula lowers this risk.
-
Is Berberine the same as Metformin? Should I stop my Metformin medication while taking Berberine?
Berberine is a food supplement, while Metformin is a regulated, FDA approved drug that is usually prescribed to Type II Diabetics. Both seem to be as efficient in controlling blood sugar and reducing blood glucose levels. As with any supplement, you should always consult with your doctor first before introducing any new supplements into your daily regime, and changing existing medication.
